How many countries can you name? Did you know that there are actually 195 countries around the world?
But what is a country? It can typically be considered as a region or area whose boundaries are defined by political geography and natural boundaries – such as oceans, rivers and mountains. A country can either be independent or a ruled by another country. An example would be the British Empire ruling over its colonies such as America in its early history, and more recently many African countries.
Countries generally have their own forms of governing, such as parliamentary republics (Botswana), religious-based republics (Afghanistan), constitutional monarchies (United Kingdom), communist states (China), parliamentary democracies (Spain) and so on. They also have their own cultures, which can be made up of one particular group or many, languages, cuisines, religion, social structures, environments, economies and of course histories.
What’s really interesting about countries is that they’re constantly evolving. Because their boundaries are often arbitrary, these can change depending on conflict and politics. One of the youngest countries in the world is South Sudan, which emerged after conflict in 2011. Similarly, countries can succumb to other political powers, such as Russia annexing Ukraine or China occupying Tibet and administering Taiwan.
Many countries come with stereotypes, good reputations and bad, but these can all be changed with understanding and learning. American author Mark Twain said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
For this reason, exploring the world can be one of the most interesting, exciting and fulfilling activities one can do. One thing’s for sure, explore any country and you’ll quickly discover that people are generally very patriotic and love sharing what makes their country great, whether it’s an iconic figure, a successful sportsperson or team, a celebrity, national beauty, a delicious dish or way of life.
